Most shops track downtime at the CNC level (“the machine is down”), then wonder why the fixes don’t stick. The missing layer is often equipment downtime: the machine is capable, but it’s blocked by an enabling asset that doesn’t show up as the owner of the loss.

Machine-level view: The supervisor sees intermittent idle time across several mills, but it’s not obvious whether the issue is scheduling, staffing, or setup. Shift-to-shift coding varies: “waiting,” “setup,” “tooling.”


Equipment-level view: “Waiting” splits into two recurring causes: “Blocked by equipment → Probe/tool setter calibration issue” and “Blocked by equipment → Tool crib delay.” Now you can separate a technical constraint (calibration repeatability, probe retries) from a flow constraint (tools not kitted, waiting on assemblies, wrong holder staged).
